Bhutan Strengthens Security Measures to Protect Sacred Lhakhangs and Chortens

In a significant move to safeguard Bhutan’s cultural and spiritual heritage, the Deputy Chief of Police (DCoP) of the Crime and Operations Department delivered a detailed presentation on “Lhakhang and Chorten Vandalism” to senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) on 12 March. The high-level meeting, graced by His Excellency Lyonpo Tshering, Minister of Home Affairs, brought together key stakeholders to address the growing concerns over the protection of the nation’s sacred religious sites.
The session was attended by prominent figures, including the Secretary of the Dratshang Lhentshog, the Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Director Generals of the Department of Local Governance and the Department of Law and Order, the Director of the Department of Culture and Dzong Development (DoCDD), representatives from the Dratsang Tensung team, and senior officers from the Royal Bhutan Police (RBP).

The presentation highlighted the urgent need to enhance security measures for lhakhangs (temples) and chortens (stupas), focusing on preserving the Ku Sung Ten—Bhutan’s sacred body, speech, and mind relics. The discussions emphasized the importance of clearly defining stakeholders' roles and responsibilities to prevent vandalism and ensure the sanctity of these revered sites.

His Excellency Lyonpo Tshering underscored the cultural and spiritual significance of lhakhangs and chortens, stating, “These sacred sites are not only pillars of our faith but also symbols of our national identity. Protecting them is a collective responsibility that requires immediate and sustained action.”

Following the presentation, the DCoP and His Excellency Lyonpo Tshering led deliberations on strengthening security strategies. It was unanimously resolved to establish a dedicated committee tasked with studying the issue in depth and developing a robust security framework. The committee’s findings will serve as the foundation for future policy decisions and actionable strategies.

This initiative marks a pivotal step in Bhutan’s commitment to preserving its rich cultural heritage and spiritual legacy. By fostering collaboration among government agencies, religious institutions, and law enforcement, the nation aims to create a secure environment for its sacred sites, ensuring they remain untouched by acts of vandalism for generations to come.

The establishment of the committee reflects the government’s proactive approach to addressing challenges and upholding the values that define Bhutan’s unique identity. As the committee begins its work, stakeholders remain optimistic that its recommendations will pave the way for a comprehensive and effective security framework, safeguarding the nation’s spiritual treasures.
