Trump Administration Responds to Bhutan’s Request, Reclassifies Country in Travel Ban Proposal

In a notable policy shift, the Trump administration has revised its draft proposal for the U.S. travel ban, removing Bhutan from the red list and reclassifying it to the yellow list. Initially, Bhutan’s inclusion among 11 countries deemed high-risk came as a surprise, given the country’s peaceful reputation and historically low migration concerns with the United States. After a comprehensive review, U.S. officials acknowledged that Bhutan posed no security threat, and its inclusion on the red list had been a mistake.

Upon learning of its initial designation, the Bhutanese government quickly reached out to U.S. officials, requesting a reevaluation of the decision. Following careful consideration, the Trump administration recognized Bhutan’s unique governance model, which is centered on the globally praised concept of Gross National Happiness (GNH). This progressive framework prioritizes the well-being of citizens over conventional economic indicators, positioning Bhutan as a global leader in sustainable, people-centric development.

As a result, the U.S. administration has adjusted Bhutan’s status, moving it from the red list to the yellow list. This change reflects a more accurate assessment of Bhutan’s relationship with the United States, emphasizing the country’s commitment to responsible international travel and diplomatic cooperation. The revision underscores the importance of open dialogue and evidence-based policymaking in creating fair and informed travel restrictions.

The Bhutanese government has expressed gratitude for the reconsideration and reiterated its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with the United States. While the U.S. State Department has yet to issue a formal statement, sources suggest that the final version of the travel ban proposal will be completed in the coming weeks. This development highlights the value of diplomatic engagement in ensuring that policies are both just and well-informed.
