Bhutanese Teen Meera Regmi Wins OCA Youth Reporter Competition, Set to Join Media Team at Asian Games

Meera Regmi, a 15-year-old student from Khangkhu Middle Secondary School, has been declared the winner of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA)–Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games Youth Reporter competition. Selected from a pool of nearly 200 Bhutanese schoolchildren, Regmi’s achievement was announced during the competition finale held on April 2 at the OCA-OS Regional Forum in Thimphu.

The Youth Reporter competition is a key component of the OCA’s broader “Asian Games for All” initiative, which aims to engage youth across the continent through activities such as an Art Competition and Fun Run. In Bhutan, the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) launched the selection process by organizing an essay competition among students from four schools. Seven finalists were eventually shortlisted and asked to write a short report on their aspirations to become sports journalists.

Meera Regmi stood out among the finalists, impressing judges with her clarity, creativity, and passion for storytelling. As part of her prize, she will be among 10 young journalists—five boys and five girls—who will join the OCA media team for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games next year in Japan.

OCA Director of Media and Broadcast, Jeans Jian Zhou, remarked that the program offers valuable hands-on experience and could give Meera a significant head start in a journalism career. Bhutan Olympic Committee Secretary General Sonam Karma Tshering also highlighted the initiative’s importance in “inspiring young dreams and nurturing future leaders in sports media.”

Speaking after the announcement, Meera expressed her excitement about the opportunity to travel to Japan and be part of an international sporting event. However, she added that her current focus remains on her academic pursuits.

This recognition marks a significant milestone not only for Meera but also for Bhutan’s growing engagement in international youth sports initiatives.
