Indian PM Modi Urges Bangladesh to Ensure Safety of Minorities, Calls for Constructive Bilateral Relations

In a crucial bilateral meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, Modi strongly urged Bangladesh to ensure the safety and security of its minority communities, particularly Hindus. He called for a thorough investigation into the "atrocities" reported against minorities in the country, emphasizing the importance of protecting vulnerable groups.

This meeting, held for the first time since the formation of Bangladesh’s interim government in August 2024, centered on strengthening the relationship between the two nations. Modi underscored the significance of a pragmatic, positive, and constructive partnership moving forward.

Additionally, Modi appealed to Yunus to refrain from using rhetoric that might further escalate tensions between the neighboring countries. The discussion turned to the sensitive issues of radicalization and minority rights, with Yunus responding by calling for a reality check against what he described as social media-driven propaganda.

Yunus also highlighted the need for both nations to respect fundamental principles like territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs. He brought up several important concerns, including the extradition of Sheikh Hasina, the contentious border killings, SAARC cooperation, and the pending Teesta water-sharing agreement.

While there was no assurance from India regarding the extradition of Sheikh Hasina, officials from Bangladesh referred to the meeting as constructive and productive. Bangladesh also urged India to avoid making inflammatory statements about Hasina’s extradition.

In conclusion, Modi reiterated India’s commitment to supporting a democratic, stable, peaceful, and inclusive Bangladesh. He emphasized that India’s relations are with Bangladesh as a whole, not with any specific political entity, reinforcing India's stance on strengthening bilateral ties based on mutual respect and cooperation.
