Bhutan to Host Inaugural 'Bathing Carnival,' Blending Ancient Tradition with Modern Festivities
The mountainous kingdom of Bhutan is set to host a groundbreaking event, the first-ever Bathing Carnival Bhutan (BCB), from September 22–24, 2025. Held in the serene landscapes of Telung, Nganglam in Pemagatshel, the three-day carnival will transform the age-old tradition of Thruebab (Blessed Rainy Day) into a vibrant celebration of water, culture, and adventure.
The carnival will merge this cultural significance with modern attractions, offering a refreshing experience for both local and international visitors. Highlights include a lively “Tug of Water War,” a mass bathing and pool party, a serene floating dinner, and high-energy beach volleyball. Guests can also enjoy a river treasure hunt, eco-treks, cultural performances, and live concerts.
Beyond entertainment, the festival will provide a deeper cultural experience. Visitors will have the chance to explore local markets and witness demonstrations of traditional crafts, such as the making of Tsatshi Buram (traditional sugar candy) and musical instruments like the Dung and Jaling.
“Bathing Carnival Bhutan is more than a tourism product. It is taking our age-old tradition of Thruebab to another level—celebrating water as a source of life, nourishment, and purification,” said Tashi Dawa, Pemagatshel Dzongda. “Pemagatshel, the blissful land of the lotus, has much to offer.”
Damcho Rinzin, Director of the Department of Tourism, highlighted the event’s dual purpose of attraction and discovery. “The introductory Bathing Carnival Bhutan is an exciting event, and we are committed to making it special for both Bhutanese and international visitors. The venue in Pemagatshel is not only stunning and untouched but also provides travelers the chance to discover a lesser-known part of Bhutan while engaging with the local community.”
The Bathing Carnival Bhutan is poised to become a signature festival on Bhutan’s cultural calendar, showcasing the nation’s commitment to sustainable tourism that enriches both visitors and local communities.
