Sonam Choden "Chungku" Joins Kickstart FC, Inspiring a New Era for Bhutanese Women in Football

In a landmark move for Bhutanese women’s football, 22-year-old Sonam Choden, affectionately known as ‘Chungku,’ has signed with Karnataka-based Kickstart FC for the remainder of the Indian Women’s League season. Hailing from Punakha, Sonam’s journey to professional football began at the tender age of 14 when she joined the Gelephu Football Academy in 2015. Over the years, she has honed her skills, playing for Mandala Women’s FC and RTC Women’s FC, and representing Bhutan in prestigious tournaments such as the AFC Championships, FIFA Friendlies, and SAFF Women’s Championships.  
Sonam’s impressive career includes 18 national team appearances, six goals, and three Bhutan National Women’s League titles, two with RTC Women’s FC and one with BFF Academy FC. Her stellar performance in the 2023 season earned her the title of Most Valuable Player, solidifying her reputation as one of Bhutan’s brightest football talents.  

Expressing her excitement, Sonam said, “I am very excited to start my professional football journey with Kickstart FC in the Indian I-League. This is a very big start for me, and I hope it will open doors for many Bhutanese women in football. I am looking forward to the challenges ahead and grateful to everyone, especially my family, teammates, and supporters.”

Sonam is only the second Bhutanese woman to play in international leagues, following in the footsteps of Deki Lhazom, who made history by signing with Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad FC. Her addition to Kickstart FC is expected to bring creativity and dynamism to the team’s midfield as they aim for a strong finish in the league. Currently sitting 7th in the eight-team league, Kickstart FC has six games remaining, and Sonam’s debut against Sribhumi FC on Thursday is highly anticipated.  

This move not only marks a personal milestone for Sonam but also serves as an inspiration for aspiring female footballers in Bhutan, showcasing the growing opportunities for women in the sport on the international stage.

 In a significant crackdown on drug-related crimes, the Royal Bhutan Police (RBP) successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle controlled substances in Gelephu, leading to the arrest of four individuals.
